In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is when an egg is fertilised by sperm outside the human body, usually in a culture dish (Franklin, 1997). This technique was developed by Sir Robert Geoffrey Edwards, a physiologist, and Dr Patrick Christopher Steptoe, an obstetrician and gynaecologist in the 1970s, as a means to treat female infertility (Mulkay, 1997).
